Dear Parent/Carer,
We held a Year 56 Assembly this morning on the theme of bullying.
The school takes a proactive approach to any suggestion or concern about bullying and has re-iterated to all children that bullying, in any of its many and varied forms, will not be tolerated.
Bullying can, of course, be both an emotive and relative term. What one child perceives as bullying, another can sometimes perceive as play. Sometimes there is a lack of realisation by the child/ren concerned that an action or behaviour has caused offence or upset. For this reason, we have to be careful about applying the word bullying to situations… while maintaining an awareness that bullying does happen and the we have to take a robust and active approach to dealing with it, should it arise… and when it arises.
We have discussed carefully with the children what forms bullying can take and how upsetting both physical, verbal and emotional bullying can be from the victim’s viewpoint. We have re-stated our commitment in school; that every pupil is safe, happy, secure and able to thrive within a nurturing and caring environment. I made the point that it is everyone’s responsibility to look after their own behaviour, their attitudes towards, and their interactions with, others. We are one big family in school. Our community is founded upon mutual respect and tolerance.
We re-iterated to the children that bullying can only exist if it is not talked about. The children were encouraged, as they consistently are, to make their feelings know to an adult if they feel uncomfortable with any situation… relating either to themselves or others. This encouragement extends to parents/carers. If there is a matter that is of concern to you… please share it with us immediately.
Our staff are very vigilant at both playtimes and lunchtimes about the interactions between children and we have very clearly established systems if we feel that actions are needed to support any individual or group. We have very well established support systems around children and we are proactive in encouraging individual children’s interests and in brokering friendships and play, where that is required.
Our approach to bullying is part of our wider Safeguarding responsibilities. I am certain that our proactive approach to this subject has your full support.

Some of our children appeared on Calendar News last night, discussing the forthcoming Royal Wedding. We hope to have a copy in school soon to share with any of you who missed it. The interview certainly was great fun and made for great television.
Decorate An Egg
My thanks to all participants in the Decorate An Egg competition. The quality of the work was, as ever, stunning. Everyone truly is a winner in this competition. The Eggs decorated our Mall for the week and were a wonderful sight to behold. Congratulations to our winners and to everyone who participated.
Book Amnesty
Could you please have a hunt around at home for any books that belong to school and return any that you find (other than your child’s current home reading book). We invest around £8,000 per year in new books… We want our children to have a great ‘book experience’ and to develop a love of reading. Having a wide range of high quality books available to them is essential.
Ofsted
My thanks to the overwhelming number of parents who returned very positive feedback about the school and the provision for their child for last week’s ofsted questionnaire. The inspection team were extremely impressed and it was lovely to hear such positive feedback from them. We expect to be able to share the full report with you next week. My thanks to Mrs Cookson, Mrs Curgenven, Councillor Mulherin and Mrs Wood who all very ably represented our Governing Body during the inspection. The process is certainly very forensic and rigorous.
In the meantime, the questionnaire that was distributed ahead of the ofsted visit is now collated and will be presented to and discussed with the Governing Body at the next round of meetings. From there, we intend to share the views collected with you and use the information to take our next forward steps as a school, based on the feedback received.

Welcome back to the Summer Term at Robin Hood. I trust that you had a lovely pre- Easter Break.
Air conditioning in the Reception classroom, a new outdoor stage, shade sail removals, a refitted store room, new flooring in two of the Year 34 classes, extensive work on all toilet blocks, new safety and security features, electrics and storage at Friendly Faces, refurbishment work on the school grounds and an extended bins enclosure to help us recycle more of our waste and a thorough clean throughout… the work doesn’t stop during the holidays at Robin Hood. Once again, my thanks to Mr Reynolds and our dedicated team that includes Mrs McGrail, Mrs Wyman, Mrs Hick and Mrs Nash.
It really is the enthusiasm and dedication of the staff at Robin Hood that make it the magical place that it is. Those of you who live close by will have noticed the sheer number of staff cars in the Car Park throughout the holiday period. I take that as a measure of the calibre of the staff here.
I can safely say that we’ve had a busy week in school this week, beginning with an Easter Assembly, followed by a visit from the Calendar News team, followed by a call from ofsted…. We have welcomed the inspection team to Robin Hood this week and will notify you of their findings as soon as we are able to.
Again, my thanks to each and every member of our staff… who are proud of our school and who have dedicated many, many additional hours this week to supporting the inspection process.

We have alerted Rodillian to this issue, and to the fact that our Year 6 residential is at the same time every year in the hope that they don’t use the same date next year. All of our Year 6’s will be invited to a Tea Party at Rodillian that takes place during the school day on … The Rodillian Transition Day for Year 6 pupils is on Tuesday 5th July.
Nursery Closure
Due to the Open Day for new parents, Nursery will be closed on Friday 27th May.

Great Exhibition

My thanks to everyone for attending Parent Consultations this week. It was nice to speak with a number of parents and hear so many positive comments about your children’s experience in school.
Friendly Faces
Our Friendly Faces Holiday Club is open again this Easter for eight days of the holiday. Due to the pattern of demand for places, Friendly Faces will be closed on Wed 6th and Thu 7th April only. Half Day (morning or afternoon) Childcare costs only £12.50, full days are charged at only £25.00. If you wish to book Childcare with Friendly Faces, please contact Louise Parker on 07810071148 or friendlyfacesatrobinhood@gmail.com. We are also taking bookings for the May Half Term and Summer at Friendly Faces. We are able to sustain a long term Holiday Club offer to parents only if there is sufficient demand for places.

Celebrating Success In Our Nursery
We have added a new Display Board in the Main Entrance to showcase the fabulous work from our Nursery. The achievements of our little ones make us rightly proud and it is great to celebrate their learning in main school. Do come in to have a look.

Those who attended last week's Celebration Assembly will have been wowed by the magnificent artwork produced by our Reception Art Club. Mrs Chin's role has been key both in this work and in the blossoming of the Arts in our Reception base. Mrs Chin is a hugely talented artist in her own right and is daily inspiring children and her colleagues to new creative heights. Mrs Chin is also a brilliant team player... and is a member of an absolutely fabulous Foundation Stage team who, together, are creating a magical and outstanding provision for our little ones.
I was delighted to receive some wonderful feedback last week from a parent about the impact that Mr Thurlow has made in Year 34, both with children and parents, since he took up class responsibility in January. Mr Thurlow has come on an eventful journey since he joined us on what was originally a six month secondment last September. It is testimony to Mr Thurlow's outstanding qualities that we eagerly extended the period of secondment, which has allowed him to thoroughly enjoy the sheer delight and the privilege of teaching a class day-to-day and which has allowed the children in his class to gain from his experience and expertise. What we all know as an absolute truth at Robin Hood is that every individual success is a team success. Mr Thurlow would be first to thank Miss Nicholls, Miss Thackeray, Mrs Wathen, Mrs Charlesworth, Mrs Smith and the whole team at Robin Hood for helping him, and the children he is working with, to succeed, every day.

Dear Parent/Carer,
The weather has improved and Spring appears to have arrived! We’ve enjoyed fabulous learning experiences throughout school this week. Our Year 56 pupils began the week on a mission to Save The World for their Climate Change focus and Key Stage One pupils participated in a Bushtucker Trial on Tuesday. As ever, we had wonderful creativity coming out of our Nursery and Reception classes and, completing the ‘Full House’, our Year 34 pupils have been focusing on E-Safety. If you aren’t already doing so every week, please take some time to look at our incredible blogs. The blogs keep you up to date with the learning that is going on around our school, learning that is – as our blogs testify – truly amazing.

The weather has improved and Spring appears to have arrived! We’ve enjoyed fabulous learning experiences throughout school this week. Our Year 56 pupils began the week on a mission to Save The World for their Climate Change focus and Key Stage One pupils participated in a Bushtucker Trial on Tuesday. As ever, we had wonderful creativity coming out of our Nursery and Reception classes and, completing the ‘Full House’, our Year 34 pupils have been focusing on E-Safety. If you aren’t already doing so every week, please take some time to look at our incredible blogs. The blogs keep you up to date with the learning that is going on around our school, learning that is – as our blogs testify – truly amazing.
Parent Consultations
Parent Consultations take place next week, week commencing 28th March. If you do not have an appointment time, please contact Mrs Smith or Mrs Holland to make one. Parent Consultations are a very important part of our shared responsibility to help your child to enjoy and achieve in school.
Red Nose Day
Thanks to everyone who made a donation in Red Nose Day. Your generous donations last week raised a total of £356.60 towards the Appeal.
Friendly Faces
Our Friendly Faces Holiday Club is open again this Easter for eight days of the holiday. Due to the pattern of demand for places, Friendly Faces will be closed on Wed 6th and Thu 7th March only. Half Day (morning or afternoon) Childcare costs only £12.50, full days are charged at only £25.00. If you wish to book Childcare with Friendly Faces, please contact Louise Parker on 07810071148 or friendlyfacesatrobinhood@gmail.com. We are also taking bookings for the May Half Term and Summer at Friendly Faces. We are able to sustain a long term Holiday Club offer to parents only if there is sufficient demand for places.
Clubs
Except Keyboards and Guitar, there are no clubs next week due to Parent Consultations and the final week of the term. Clubs will begin again, as usual, on the second week back, week commencing 25th April.
Nursery Closure
Due to the Open Day for new parents, Nursery will be closed on Friday 27th May.

Coffee Mornings in the Community Annexe
Our next Coffee Morning and Lost Property Sale takes place in the Community Annexe on Tuesday 29th March and on every second Tuesday.

Safeguarding - Keeping Children Healthy & Safe - Annual Report to Parents
Dear Parent/Carer,
This letter provides an annual update to parents on the Safeguarding measures that are taken at Robin Hood. Safeguarding covers all aspects of child safety, welfare and wellbeing and includes attendance, medicines, behaviour, Health & Safety and what children are taught about healthy lifestyles and safe practices.
In this letter, I share with you our policies and practices that relate to Safeguarding. School policies are in place to ensure that there is a consistent approach to practice throughout the school. It is my role as Headteacher to ensure that policies are adhered to by staff, governors and volunteers in school.
Adults have a tremendous impact on young children and, with this in mind, adults at Robin Hood:
• are good role models for children
• contribute to a climate of trust and co-operation
• work within the agreed policies of the school
• promote a happy, caring and safe school environment
• encourage children to think for themselves, ask questions and find answers
• create an environment of trust
• support and challenge children in their learning
• are conscientious and hard-working
• recognise, value and celebrate the strengths of every individual within the building.
Child Protection
All staff receive Child Protection training. This training was updated for all staff in September 2010. School and other services for children and families work together to support the needs of children. I am the designated Child Protection Officer in the school at this time. There is a named Governor for Child Protection. Currently, this is Jenny Curgenven. The Child Protection Policy can be viewed on the school website.
Attendance
Children’s attendance at school is monitored on a daily basis. Notable absences, patterns of absence and/or late marks are investigated by Mrs Comstive, our Learning Mentor. Attendance matters or concerns can be addressed to myself, to Mrs Comstive, or to Mrs Cookson, our SEN co-ordinator.
In serious cases of persistent absence, the Attendance Strategy Team is involved. All schools have a responsibility for promoting good attendance. Our school prides itself on its very good attendance figures. Our Attendance Policy can be viewed on the school website.
Behaviour
High standards of behaviour are expected at all times at Robin Hood. Pupils respect for our school and for one another is very high. Where necessary, children are reminded about the importance of everyone being happy and keeping safe. In the rare event of behaviour consistently falling below the level of our expectations, we will deal sensitively with the issue and engage with parents in order to bring about a swift return to acceptable standards. Our Behaviour and Anti-Bullying Policy can be viewed on the school website.
Health and Safety
All adults at Robin Hood are aware that they have a responsibility to ensure children and adults are able to work in a healthy and safe environment. The school has a number of First Aid and Paediatric First Aid-trained members of staff who deal with accidents, should they occur.
Curriculum
Through the planned curriculum we ensure that the issues of healthy eating, physical exercise and safety are taught. This is enhanced by the many visitors to school, eg; Police Officers - who talk to the children about issues such as road safety, safe people and drugs awareness - the School Nurse, etc.
Safer recruitment and selection
I hold the certificate in Safer Recruiting. At least one member of every interview panel has completed the Safer Recruiting training. All staff new to the school and volunteers who work in school on a regular basis have a CRB, List 99 and ISA check. Full references are acquired before any person takes up a post at the school.
Complaints
Should parents have any complaints the school staff will listen to your concerns and will follow up any issues arising. There is a clear procedure in place. I am always happy to meet with you and help resolve any issues. The school is committed to working closely with parents / carers for the benefit of our children. No problem is too small and, if dealt with immediately, can often be prevented from becoming a bigger issue. If you continue to feel an issue has not been resolved then you can contact the complaints committee of the governing body. Our Complaints Policy can be viewed on the school website.
In the twelve months since I last wrote to you with details of the Safeguarding measures we take, we have:
• Added additional signage around the school site
• Added signage to the Car Park area
• Worked with Leeds City Council to improve disabled parking access on Leeds Road
• Improved disabled access at the front of the school
• Improved security features on the Community Annexe building
• Added further safety fencing to the front of the school
• Added further safety features to the gate onto the Main Road adjacent to the Nursery Building
• Reviewed and updated all policies, practices and procedures
• Commissioned an independent review of Safeguarding, using ofsted and Education Leeds guidance
• Held a Safety Awareness Week in November 2010
• Had Health & Safety and Environmental Health reviews in our kitchen and in Friendly Faces
• Completed termly Health & Safety checks and acted upon the recommendations of our Health & Safety Officers
