Dear Parent/Carer,

We have had another super week in school.  I have enjoyed a full week of classroom observations alongside my Senior Leadership Team colleagues and we have been privileged to see some fantastic stuff.  At their best, learning and teaching at Robin Hood really are things of great beauty.  There is brilliant learning going on at Robin Hood!

Topics
Our Foundation Stage pupils have been making dragons, lanterns and much more this week to celebrate the Chinese New Year.   Year 1/2 have been preparing for their fundraising event to raise money to help save endangered animals – more of this next.  Year 3/4 children have been evacuated, bombed, sheltered and goodness knows what else as part of their World War II topic.  This week they were visited by Chris Woofenden, a Second World war re-enactor, who brought lots of interesting artefacts and weapons from the war to share with the children.  Meanwhile, our Year 5/6 pupils are spending their afternoons researching, painting, making, writing and rehearsing for an Ancient Greek theatre performance.  We pride ourselves on making our topics and our curriculum as exciting, as fun and as stimulating as we can for our children.  Ofsted, of course, recognised our curriculum as ‘exceptional’ last year.  We are keen to take it to ever new heights as the more enthused our children are to learn, the deeper and more lasting their learning will be.

Year 1/2 Fundraising Event
Year 1/2 will be inviting you to their fundraising event to help save endangered animals on Thursday 2nd February, 2.15pm.  This is an incredible project that the children have themselves developed and led on.  We hope that you are able to join us on the day.

New year – new challenge
The National Literacy Trust and Oxford University Press are kicking off 2012 by launching the Reading Miles Global Challenge, a new competition for all UK schools.  Pupils are rewarded with 500 reading miles for every 10 minutes spent reading.  Children collect these reading miles in their Reading Record for every signed reading session completed.

Please record any reading you are doing with your child and any reading that they are doing independently.  Not only will they collect Merits, but they’ll collect Reading Miles too.  Teachers will calculate how many reading miles children have accumulated and we will be celebrating successes during a special assembly on World Book Day on Thursday 1st March.

We encourage every child in school to see how far they can read around the world during the next five weeks, leading up to World Book Day. Any children completing the reading world tour - a whopping 33,000 miles (or 11 reading hours) will be entered into a National Competition, where prizes include £50 worth of books and a family ticket to their closest attraction for the winning pupil and £500 worth of books for their school.

Wool required
We are seeking donations of wool for Mrs Chin’s latest spectacular Art project.  Mrs Chin has made a connection with colleagues at the Armley Industrial Museum.  The Museum hopes to create the biggest pom-pom sheep in the world and is recruiting Leeds schools to contribute to the project.  The Robin Hood Art Club, of course, is keen to make its contribution to the World Record attempt.  We hope to have our own permanent pom-pom sheep too.  Any donations – all colours – would be very gratefully received.

Lunchtime Supervisory Assistant
We have a vacancy at school for a Lunchtime Supervisory Assistant after the resignation of Steph Brennan.  My thanks to Steph for her contribution to the school in this role.  We are sad to see her go.  The role is an opportunity to enjoy some quality time with our children playing and having fun at lunchtime.  Anyone interested, please see Mrs Smith for further details.

Apprenticeship vacancy
We also have an apprenticeship vacancy in our Early Years.  Our apprentices are all studying for NVQ’s in early Years education.  Anyone interested, please contact Mrs Smith for further details.

Have a lovely weekend,
Mr Wilson

NEWS ROUND UP
We have had a very busy week in Nursery and the children never fail to amaze us with their achievements! I would like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you for the time and effort you spend supporting your child at home. It is having such a tremendous impact on their development in Nursery. The progress they are making is incredible and the steps they are taking in their learning are really starting to shine!

THIS WEEK
The children have been learning about the traditions of the Chinese New Year. We made our very own dragon to dance with and have filled the room with beautiful hanging lanterns. The lanterns and dragons that arrived in Nursery as home learning are a real compliment to the activities that have supported the learning in Nursery and it is wonderful to see the pride in the children’s faces as they spot them decorating the room! We have also been developing our writing skills, sending happy new cards and continuing to build on the children’s number skills, recognising numbers up to 20 and adding 2 small numbers together to find a total.

NEXT WEEK
The children will be continuing with the topic “Animals in their Habitats” and learning about Jungle Animals. We will be sharing stories, learning songs, and creating our very own maps to go on our very own animal safari!
We will also be using the Cbeebies characters to help our understanding of subtraction as we juggle bananas with the Jingle Jungle monkey! Please do visit the Cbeebies website at home too to access stories and games based around Jungle characters.

How you can help us
   · Please return your child’s reading record and name writing book on a             Wednesday (Group1) or Friday (Group 2).
        · Continue sharing stories and rhymes.
        · Encourage your child to put on their own coats, socks and shoes.

Please could I make a request for old newspapers to be brought into Nursery for the children to use on the painting table.

Many thanks for your continued support

Have a super weekend.

RECEPTION NEWS ROUND UP
Well done to everybody for another amazing week in Reception. Thank you to everyone for their amazing home learning (which gets better every week!) and thank you too to Archie and his mum for bringing their Guinea Pigs in to visit!

THIS WEEK
We have been learning all about China and the Chinese New Year celebrations. The children have looked at China on the map and have been finding out facts about the weather, their types of transport and the way they celebrate special events and then comparing these to familiar events in our own culture. We have had a Chinese food tasting session and the children have enjoyed role-play and collaborative creative projects including making our very own Chinese dragon!

NEXT WEEK
The children will continue learning about animals in their habitats and we will be focusing on 'Jungle animals'. For their home learning we have asked the children to come up with some super jungle animals that we can add to our brilliant displays in the classroom.  Each day we will be finding out about a different animal and will be sharing stories, songs and rhymes to help develop the children's understanding. During our topic sessions we will be working on a collaborative display to showcase our super learning.
Over the next two weeks we will be completing our half termly assessments and would really appreciate it if you could make sure your child brings their reading bag in everyday.

HOW YOU CAN HELP US
  • by listening to your child read for at least five minutes every day and adding a comment to the shared reading record
  • by practising the words of the week which are: went/it's/from/children/just/help
  • by completing the home learning task and bringing it in on Monday morning
Thank you for your continued support, it really is having a massive effect on the super progress your child is making.

It's been another fantastic week of learning! The children have been busy preparing for our special event next week and their enthusiasm for the rainforest has grown and grown! We would like to thank all the children and parents for all the efforts made in home learning and added extras being brought in to class about the rainforest, which has helped the children even further in their learning. There is no home learning this week so please spend time reading with your children and applying the spellings from this half term in to sentences.

Numeracy
This week the children have been wowing us with their knowledge on navigating! The children have been amazing at knowing the difference between left and right, clockwise and anti clockwise, have been turning in quarters, halves and wholes, understanding co-ordinates and using compasses! Their engagement in all of the activities has been brilliant. Well done to you all!

Literacy
We are sure you would have been hearing all about our quest to adopt an endangered animal from the rainforest! The children have been writing a letter to yourselves, about why you have to come in to school next week! You are invited to our 'sale of learning' which is taking place on Wednesday 1st February, in the school hall from 2.15pm - 3.00pm.  You will be able to purchase any of your children's work that they have been working on over the past five weeks. This is so we can raise money to all adopt an endangered animal from the rainforest. You will receive a letter from your child to explain why we are asking for donations and we would like it if you would be able to write a reply to these letters that can be posted in the school post-box. You will need to include your child's full name and class.

Topic
The children have been busy working in groups of six, creating fantastic large scale art work drawings of different endangered animals. They have also begun sewing their own stuffed animals which will be on show at the 'sale of learning'. We really are very proud of their achievements and we are sure you will be able to see how much amazing learning has taken place over this half term.

Next week

Numeracy
The children will be learning about halves and quarters of shapes. They will also be learning how to halve numbers. This will include the children taking part in a range of investigations and following recipes to bake some food for you to eat on your visit to school on Wednesday.

Literacy
The children have been really enjoying PE this half term so we have decided to invite Mr Silly, Mr Greedy and Mr Strong to come and take part in one of our lessons. The children will be continuing to use persuasive language, punctuation, developed sentences, paragraphs and super handwriting.

Topic
The children will be completing their sewing of stuffed animals and understanding all about charity. They will be looking closely at the WWF website and as a class they will be deciding what endangered animal they would like to adopt. Take a look at the website and have a look!

Have a lovely weekend and we look forward to seeing you on Wednesday!

LKS2 News

We have had yet another fantastic week in 3/4 full of inspirational learning. We are so pleased with the children's enthusiasm towards our topic of World War Two and have been busy writing our diary entry's for our evacuee journals, creating propaganda posters, learning WW2 songs and making our very own Anderson shelters!

To celebrate the end of the war we will be holding our very own VE day party to share our fantastic outcomes from the unit with parents and carers. This will be held on Tuesday 7th of February at 2:30pm, in the school hall. We will be asking the children to be dressed in traditional 1940's outfits.

Literacy
The children have been learning all about the Blitz this week and the impact this had on city life. They have used all of their factual information to create a diary entry as an evacuee talking about how they felt and what they saw on a visit back to London. The children have been developing their ideas into rainbow paragraphs full of amazing description and detail. We are so impressed with the children's fantastic use of punctuation, wow words and sentence starters to further enhance their writing. We would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate all the children for their outstanding presentation, everyone has been trying super hard with their diagonal joins and the handwriting in 3/4 is truly outstanding! Next week, we are using all of the knowledge we have gained around WW2 to write a letter as an evacuee to our fathers. All of our diary entries and letters have gone into creating our own WW2 evacuee journal and we are very excited to be sharing all these with you at our VE day celebration on the 7th February, in the school hall.

Numeracy
This week, the children have been applying their knowledge of reading scales and converting measurements to weigh out recipes that were used during the war and have been solving problems by weighing out different objects. Next week, the children will be using their understanding of measurement to convert different capacities in order to solve some practical problems. We will be making Moshi Monster drinks and recording different capacities on various scales. We are continuing with our push on times tables. Please continue to support your child with their quick recall of times tables up to 12x12. TNT tables is a great, fun game to help them practice and see if they can beat their best time: http://www.fieryideas.co.uk/tnt.html

Topic
The children have had lots of fun this week creating their own propaganda posters, the children worked super hard through detailed illustration to portray a government message from WW2. We have also been making our own Anderson shelters out of corrugated card. Next week the children will be creating their own mini allotments complete with various vegetables. Once again, we're all looking forward to sharing all of our fantastic outcomes from this half term with you at our VE day celebration on the 7th February.

Please ensure your child has a warm, outdoor PE kit in school. 3/4T & 3/4N on Tuesdays and 3/4M on Thursdays.

Have a great weekend,

Year 3/4 team

UKS2 News Roundup:
  • Congratulations to Jack Gillings who is our achiever of the week this week. Jack is incredibly hard working and is really impressing us with how well he is engaging with his targets and his sheer determination to succeed- A true inspiration!

Numeracy:
  • In Numeracy, we started this week looking at Prime numbers and carrying out some investigations. We then went on to learning about number patterns and sequences, with some really highly challenged contextual learning that really got everyone's brains working hard.
  • Next week, we will be learning all about measures, including: reading scales, finding differences between two measurements and finding fractions, decimals and percentages of measures too!
  • Home Learning:  Why not try the 'Multiple Wipeout' or 'Ghost Blasters' ipad/ipod app to help improve the speed of times table facts even more!
The Year 6's also have their SAT revision packs as their ongoing home learning.

Literacy:
  • This week, we have been planning and developing our own Greek Myth. We have planned the events and created some fantastic character descriptions, applying our skills from previous weeks. We have also taught the children how to create effective shifts in time, which mean the children can move their story on whilst focussing on key events in detail.
  •  Next week, we will be continuing our myths with a particular focus on inserting dialogue to enhance the story. We'll continue to focus on the use of figurative language.
  • Home Learning: This week's spellings involve using apostrophes for omission. The children will be told the full word during the test, the children will then be expected to know how to spell the shortened version of the word, placing the apostrophe in the correct place. They are: don't, he's, wouldn't, could've, can't, wasn't, they're, weren't, she'll, it's.

Other areas of the curriculum:
  • In Topic, we've been continuing to create some fantastic outcomes which will form a part of the historical research presentations. These outcomes include written, ICT and Art outcomes. The masks are made, the scripts are written, the actors are learning their lines and next week we will be supporting the Technology teams to create backdrops and music for the Greek Myth production.

Dear Parent/Carer,

Home Learning
I would like once again to say an enormous thank you and well done to all of our children, parents and families throughout school who regularly engage with our Home Learning.  We display Home Learning in classrooms and around school and it is absolutely stunning.  There is some great creativity going on at home and it is clear that our children are having a fabulous time learning at home with parents and family on the various projects.  Nursery, Reception, Key Stage One and all the way throughout school… Wow!  It’s great stuff!  We very much appreciate and value the great community support that we receive as a school.  We are, of course, committed to helping your child to achieve and feel that if we are able to suggest ideas, projects and/or how to support, it is then up to parents to decide how little or how much of the Home Learning opportunities that they want to engage in with their child.  Do have a look at our Home Learning displays on our blogs and when you’re next in school… perhaps at a Celebration Friday event.  I am very proud of the deep connection that exists between parents and the school and the partnership in supporting your children that we share.

Celebration Friday dates
30th March
25th May
13th July
Nursery hold separate Half Termly Celebration Events due to the ‘split week’.

Entrance Area Display
On subject of celebration, do pop in to have a read of our latest Entrance Area display, opposite Mrs Smith & Mrs Holland.  Mrs Wathen and our team have dressed the display board with many of the newspaper and magazine articles that have appeared about the school over the last few years. There is an impressive range of articles… showing that Robin Hood enjoys excellence and success on many fronts.

Art
You can look out for further press coverage in the Rothwell Record about our fabulous Artwork and Community Enhancement Programme.  Last week Lofthouse Children’s Centre held an Art Exhibition launch featuring our children’s creative works.  My congratulations and thanks to Mrs Chin and Mrs Mistry for their fabulous work at Art Club.  I think our Art has reached yet another new level, as has our community art programme, which is seeing an increased number of ‘satellite galleries’ around the city.  I am sure that soon wherever you go you will be seeing Art by pupils at Robin Hood. This may be the start of some long and brilliant careers…

Animals in Foundation Stage
Our Foundation Stage pupils enjoyed some fantastic experiential learning this week when they came face-to-face with a range of creatures brought into school by ZooLab.  Our Nursery and Reception children were far braver than me… many of them having a go a touching the rat, the snake, the cockroach and much more.  Our Nursery looked like a scene from a Bush Tucker Trial for the morning… but the children had a fabulous time learning about the creatures and have become something of experts.

Parent Mail
While we remain in the grip of cold weather there is always the danger of snow and consequent disruption to roads, schools, etc.  We have a very good opening record during adverse weather conditions, however, each circumstance is different and it is important that our lines of communication are well established and robust.  Everyone who has completed a Parent Mail form would receive an instant text alert in the event of a closure or, indeed, in the event of any other circumstance.  We would notify of closure via our facebook page, our blog and our noticeboard.  Local radio also carries closure information.  The most highly recommended system is Parent Mail.  If you have not yet completed your details for Parent Mail text alerts and email, please do so.  We can then guarantee getting timely information to you.

Guitar Club
We have spaces available at the Beginners Guitar Club on Thursday evenings 3.15pm - 4.15pm after the February Half Term.  Anyone interested please contact Mrs Dale.

Mad Science
We still have places available for a Mad Science After School Club.  Anyone interested please contact Mrs Smith at the school office.

Have a fabulous weekend,
Mr Wilson

The children proved to be very brave as they met and handled animals such as a snake, a cockroach and a millipede! They even got the chance to come face to face with a very adorable rat! (That’s a sentence I never thought I’d say!)  Well done boys and girls!

THIS WEEK
We have taken full advantage of the fascinating facts we found out about looking after different animals and used them to support our role play in the Vets. We have also moved on to learning about animals that live on a farm. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mrs Friar for the absolutely gorgeous Old Macdonald Farm display that she has created with the children over the course of the week. Please do take a look!
The children have also been practising their counting and addition skills as they learn to add 2 small numbers together to find the total.

NEXT WEEK
The children will be learning about the traditions of Chinese New Year. We will be watching video clips to help us see the family preparations and as a stimulus for creating our very own dragon dance! The children will be involved in making our very own Chinese dragon and composing our own musical beats to dance to.
We will also continue to develop our name writing as we make and send cards and build on our number skills, counting out, counting on and adding together.

Play games that involve turn taking, number recognition and counting.
Listen to songs and rhymes, pointing out the words that rhyme and make your own to add on.
The children have also been working hard on listening for initial sounds in words. Please do encourage your child to think of what letter sound words start with and think of other words that start with the same sound.
Please could I make a request for old newspapers to be brought into Nursery for the children to use on the painting table.

Many thanks for your continued support
Have a great weekend.

We have had another amazing week in Reception. We started the week with an exciting visit from Zoolab where the children and staff got to hold a variety of interesting pets including Mr Marmalade the snake, Matilda and Thumbelina the pet rats and Ursula the tarantula. Miss Lambert reported that every single person behaved beautifully so well done to you all!

Key Stage 1 Newsletter

The preparations for our fundraising open afternoon are well underway this week with the children developing a range of outstanding outcomes to spread the message of the rainforests! You are invited to join us on Thursday 2nd February at 2:15pm to celebrate this learning with us and we are sure you will be blown away!
This half term our PE theme is gymnastics which we have based around the use of climbing equipment and various pieces of apparatus within the hall. It is important that your child brings their PE kit to school every Wednesday. This should be a white t-shirt and blue or black shorts. Wearing incorrect clothing poses a serious health and safety risk and children with unsuitable attire will be unable to take part.
Home reading records are to be handed into school every Monday morning. We would like to say a huge thank you to all the parents of KS1 as the reading records have proven to be a great way of keeping us all informed of the amazing progress the children are making. Please feel free to add comments to the reading record about how you feel your child has done when reading at home, so we can ensure we praise and celebrate these achievements and also offer help and advice where needed.
This Weeks Learning
NumeracyThis week in Numeracy the children have been trying to improve the speed of their mental calculations. The children have been practicing each time to improve upon their time and results from the day before with great success. Why not try this out at home with a timer and a list of calculations. We have set the bar in year 1 at 10 questions in 2 minutes!
We have also continued to look at shapes with the children engaging in a range of investigations that required them to think carefully about the properties of shapes in order to draw, build and recreate them. The children have also explored symmetry with the children first of all designing symmetrical butterflies of the Rainforest before looking more closely at lines of symmetry in shape.
LiteracyIn literacy the children have begun generating ideas and vocabulary to use in an invitation to tempt you to our open afternoon. The children have been thinking about how best to persuade people to come along through the use of adjectives and text effects, as well as ensuring the use of connectives (and, but, so, because) to provide the reader with as much information as possible!
TopicIn Topic this week the children have begun the design and make aspect of our fundraising planning. The children have been designing a range of stuffed animals to promote endangered species. We have also been utilising our amazing art skills to create a piece of small scale art work which will be enhanced and developed into next week so watch this space!

The children have impressed us yet again with their fantastic learning and attitude this week. They have been showing great perseverance with their numeracy and literacy and are really enjoying learning all about World War Two and what life was like as an evacuee.

To celebrate the end of the war we will be holding our very own VE day party in the hall to share our fantastic outcomes from the unit with parents and carers. This will be held on Tuesday 7th of February at 2:30pm, in the school hall. We will be asking the children to be dressed in traditional 1940's outfits.

Literacy
The children have been imagining they are their evacuee's mother, who is still living in London throughout the war time. This has seen the children write super letters to their evacuees, telling them all about life in the city during the war. The children made fantastic notes all about the jobs women did, as well as the blackout at night time and the 'Digging for Victory' scheme. Next week, we will be looking at the Blitz, with a focus on rainbow paragraphs- why not ask your child to tell you what a rainbow paragraph is?

Numeracy
This week, we have been learning about the different units we measure weight in. The children have been great at converting between kg and g and have even been using decimal and fraction notation! Next week, the children will be applying their learning to weigh out recipes that were used during the war time. We are continuing with our push on times tables. Please continue to support your child with their quick recall of times tables up to 12x12. TNT tables is a great, fun game to help them practice and see if they can beat their best time: http://www.fieryideas.co.uk/tnt.html

In ICT the children have been continuing with their fabulous PowerPoint presentations with hyperlinks all about World War II. Miss Nicholls has been impressed with the children’s efforts and achievements in art and everyone is showing a great attitude towards football in PE; they are really developing their dribbling and passing skills.

Please ensure your child has a warm, outdoor PE kit in school. 3/4T and 3/4N on Tuesdays, 3/4M on Thursdays.

Have a great weekend,

Year 3/4 team

  • Next week, we will be writing our own Greek myth with a particular focus on showing shifts in time. We'll continue to focus on developing character and setting description.
  • Home Learning: This week's spellings are linked to our writing focus next week. goddess, creature, maiden, daughter, underworld, heroic, citizen, consequence, fateful, ancient
Other areas of the curriculum:
  • In Topic, we've been making decisions in teams about how to present the historical research we've been learning. This will include a written, ICT and Art outcome. The Design Team from each class have been creating masks for the drama performance and the Theatre Direction Teams have been refining the script. 5/6D will be presenting the myth of Demeter and Persephone, 5/6G Perseus and the Hunt for Medusa's head and 5/6B Theseus and the Minotaur. Dear Parent/Carer,
We have had a fantastic first full week back after the Christmas Break. Learning is in full swing and the children are well and truly involved in their new topics.

Mad Science
Key Stage 2 started the week with a visit from “Nuclear Nick”, who brought our Monday assembly to life with his impressive Science experiments. The children will have the opportunity to sign up to a “Mad Science” after school club by completing the booking form. Please see Mrs Holland at the front desk if your child is interested in signing up for this club.

Clubs
We have had a tremendous turn out for the after school clubs this week. We are very fortunate at Robin Hood to have staff who are dedicated to using their talents in providing high quality after school learning. We do ask if your child has decided that they do not want to attend a club for which they have signed up, that you inform the member of staff who leads the club. Thank you.

GTPs
Welcome to Nina Cheetham and Tony Wilcox, who are joining us this half term as part of the Graduate Teaching Program. They are a valuable addition to our team. Miss Cheetham is working in Miss Hinton’s class and Mr Wilcox is working in Miss Mees’ class.

Success for an ex pupil
Year 5/6 enjoyed a fantastic Drama day at the West Yorkshire Playhouse last week. We thoroughly enjoyed the performance of Annie. Miss Gascoigne’s class were treated to a performance by one of our ex pupils, Paige Tye, who was playing a prominent role as one of the orphans. We were so impressed by her dancing, singing and acting and even got the chance to leave a card of encouragement in her dressing room!

Year 6 parent consultations
Next week, the Year 6 teachers will be conducting Parent Meetings. We are always very proud of the fantastic relationship we have with parents and know that this will be a purposeful opportunity to talk through progress, next steps and how we can support each other in enabling the children to be the very best that they can be.

Have a great weekend,
Mr Wilson

NEWS ROUND UP
The children have had a fabulous week in Nursery. The children have been talking about their own pets and have shown that they are very responsible pet owners, sharing some very important ideas about how we look after our pets.

THIS WEEK
We have been designing our very own pet carriers. The children worked collaboratively to draw their ideas, and then used their plan to create their model. The outcome was incredible so please take a look at the blog to see the finished results.
In Numeracy the children have been looking at addition, adding 2 small groups together to find the total, and in Literacy we have been focusing on our pencil control and letter formation, whilst designing our very own pet posters!

NEXT WEEK
The children will be visited by Zoo Lab. This fabulous visit will allow the children to meet some interesting small animals and provide an opportunity for the children to handle some cuddly pets too! We will be using the visit to support the learning in the setting and to develop our knowledge around small animals. Please could you inform us if your child has any allergies to small animals.

How you can help us
Please return your child’s reading record and name writing book on a Wednesday (Group 1) or Friday (Group 2).
Encourage your child to spot words, letters and numbers in the environment.
Provide opportunities for writing e.g. making a list when visiting the supermarket, drawing pictures and labelling, making letter shapes in flour / foam / water etc.
Find time to colour with your child. Maybe buy a new colouring book and enjoy colouring the picture together, thinking about colour choice, keeping inside the lines and keeping the pencil direction going the same way.

We are running very low on spare clothing especially for boys, and in particular trousers. If anyone is able to donate their child’s clothes that they have out grown we would be very grateful.
Also now that the children have settled into Nursery confidently, could we please ask that they no longer bring in toys from home.

Many thanks for your continued support

Have a super weekend.
Miss Bradshaw and the Nursery team

RECEPTION NEWS ROUND UP
This week we have had another 'pet - tastic' week in Reception and the children continue to amaze us with their attitudes and their independence. Well done! If you are one of the few children who can't yet fasten up your own coat, please can you keep practising this at home. Thank you!

THIS WEEK
We have been learning all about Pets and their habitats. The children have created some fabulous pet carriers which they have designed and built to their own specifications. I am sure that Miss Bradshaw will be relieved to know that if she has to take her pet cat to the vets, she can rely on Reception to design a safe way of carrying him!
In numeracy we have been sorting pets by different criteria and we have been investigating the most popular pets. We have then put this information on a tally chart and even produced some graphs using the 2Simple programme.

NEXT WEEK
We have an exciting visit on Monday with the  Zoolab visiting us. http://www.zoolabuk.com/content/animal-handling-workshops.html
They are going to run a pet workshop in the morning where the children will find out about the different types of pets that people have, what they like to eat and how to care for them. There will even be the opportunity to hold and stroke the pets!
If your child has any allergies that you feel may be affected by this experience, please let Miss Lambert or Mrs Steel know as soon as possible. Thank you
We will also be identifying some mystery farm animals sounds, learning the song Old Macdonald has a Farm and creating some super habitats for our farm display.

HOW YOU CAN HELP US
Please continue to support your child by engaging with our blog and by completing and handing in their home learning on a Monday morning. We have noticed some amazing  reading going on in Reception, so next week we will be carrying out our assessments and hopefully moving some children onto the next reading band. The children who have made amazing progress in their reading do read at home every day for about five minutes!

Thank you for your support

KS1 Newsletter

It has been another fantastic week in Key Stage 1 and the children have been busy, busy, busy learning lots of new facts about the Rainforest. Please check out the KS1 blog for pictures of the posters the children have created!!!

Home Learning
The KS1 team have been very impressed with the home learning the children have produced. These have gone up on display in the classroom and been shared among the other classes. We would like to thank you, parent/carers, for your continued support in creating fantastic posters/fact files/PowerPoints at home. The children are always very excited to show off their creations on a Monday morning, which is so nice to see.

This weeks Home Learning is a Numeracy focus continuing the learning on 2D shapes.  Please hand the pictures and books in on Monday 16th January.

Fund Raising event
As part of our ‘Rainforest’ topic this half term, the children have learnt about deforestation and the global effects and the destruction of habitats.  This half term the children will be creating a stuffed animal and animal art pictures which they will be producing in order to sell at a fund raising event, using the money raised to adopt an endangered animal.  During the next two weeks the children will be writing an invitation to send home, to invite you to the event which will be held on Thursday 2nd February at 2:15pm - 3:00pm. We hope you can support our quest to adopt an endangered animal and continue to celebrate the children's learning.

Numeracy
This week in Numeracy the children have continued to look at 2D and 3D shapes, discussing the properties using the language face, edge, vertices, corner, side. They have continued to sort the shapes according to their properties and discuss the reason for their groupings.   Across the week the children have been investigating the concept of symmetry and how to find the line of symmetry.

During the mental maths sessions the children have continued to develop their addition skills and quick recall of addition facts. Please continue to support your child at home giving them 2 single digit numbers to add together.

Next week the children will continue to look at symmetry, finding more than one line of symmetry within a shape and discussing how they know it is symmetrical (both sides of the shape are the same). The children will investigate which shape has the most lines of symmetry and why. The children will progress onto looking at tessellation and how shapes can fit together without leaving any gaps to create a pattern. Keep checking out the KS1 blog for examples of these!!

Literacy
This week in Literacy the children have written an invitation to their Mr Men character (Mr Greedy Year 1, Mr Strong Year 1/2, Mr Silly Year 1).  The children have structured their invitation to include the following:
Opening paragraph - telling the character what they are being inviting to and why they should come. The children have used enticing phrases such 'You can't afford to miss this party' 'You won’t believe your eyes....'
Events Paragraph - telling the character about the games which they will play when they come to the party using verbs (describing words) and adverbs (describing the verb).
Boring details - Telling the reader the Date, Time, Place, Telephone Number.
Close - where the children beg their character.

Each class will have a party on Monday and hope to see their Mr Men character there!  If the children want to bring in some party clothes they are welcome to do so.  The children need to come to school in their school uniform and can get changed when the party starts.

LKS2 Newsletter

Another exciting and lively week has taken place in year 3/4.  We started the week by recreating our very own evacuation to the countryside. The children investigated what they would need to pack in their suitcase and re-enacted scenes from the train station.  We even created our very own freeze frames, imagining how the children must have been feeling at that time.

Literacy
After recreating the scene at the train station, the children have imagined what their journey on the train would have been like, who their host families were and made a prediction about what their new life in the country was like. The children have been using a variety of Ozzy Openers, Violet Vocabulary, Captain Connectives and Pete Punctuation. As part of our WW2 topic, the children have begun to publish their writes and create their very own journal. The children's presentation has been beautiful and we are very excited to see the finished outcome and share them with you at our VE Day celebration next month.

Numeracy
This week we have continued to look at units of measurement for length. The children have applied their understanding of conversions and have been finding the perimeters of simple and compound shapes.  We are continuing to have a HUGE push on the children's times tables recall. Please practise times tables with your child, up to 12x12 as this will support their multiplication skills next half term. This game is a fun way to practice your times table skills.

This week we have also begun our Art, ICT and PE sessions. We have been very impressed, as always, with the children's superb listening skills.

Please ensure your child has a warm, outdoor PE kit in school. 3/4T and 3/4N on Tuesdays, 3/4M on Thursdays.

Have a great weekend

Year 3/4 team

  • This week, we have been using figurative language to describe the characters and settings from the Annie story. The children have retold the Annie story and made decisions about the key events to include.
  • Next week, our focus will be on creating suspense, tension and anticipation in writing. We'll be looking at a range of techniques which enable us to do this. We'll also be looking at how we can infer information about a character.
  • Home Learning: This week's spellings are linked to our writing focus next week. Minotaur, Medusa, Cerberus, Percy, petite, hideous, ghastly, gruesome, immense, powerful.
Other areas of the curriculum:

  • In Topic, the children have been reading to learn facts about their historical research focus. We've begun to collate learning together to identify areas for further research and development. The Theatre Direction Teams have been writing scripts for the Greek myth which the drama production will be based on.
